I've
expanded on the one liners with quotations from various sources . Please
consider these a starting point for you to find your own understanding
of the values not as 'holy writ'.
I should point out that when I started this it was for my personal use
and I've just realised that I borrowed without attributing some of the
one liners from Dr. Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws for Parents
(Creativity's and Responsibility).
Courage
- seek excellence in all endeavours |
Dictionary
definition: the ability to control fear and to deal with danger,
pain, uncertainty etc.; bravery |
"Trust
in yourself. Your perceptions are often more accurate than you are
willing to believe." (Claudia Black) |
"With
courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate
and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity."(Keshavan
Nair) |
Most
of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people
who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all."
(Dale Carnegie) |
Creativity
- Every time you wish or want, you plant a seed |
Dictionary
definitions: producing or using original and unusual ideas |
"There
is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if
you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it
will be lost". (Martha Graham) |
"Don't
ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come
alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is
people who have come alive." Harold Whitman |
"A
human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion,
butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance
accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders,
give orders, co-operate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new
problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight
efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. (Robert
A. Heinlein) |
Faith
- Nature is a manifestation of Spirit and so all is sacred and holy |
Dictionary
definitions: great trust or confidence in something or someone.
If you accept/take something on faith, you are willing to believe
it without proof. |
Heaven
and earth, the watered plains, the moon's shining globe, the sun
and stars are all strengthened by Spirit working within them,
and mind stirs this great mass, infused through all its limbs
and mixed in with its body. [Virgil Aeneid vi.724-727 (30-19BC)]
|
Every
part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle,
every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing,
and every humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of
my people. (Chief Seattle) |
"God
has made different religions to suit different aspirants, times
and countries. All doctrines are only so many paths; but a path
is by no means God Himself. Indeed, once can reach God if one follows
any of the paths with whole hearted devotion. One may eat a cake
with icing either straight or sidewise. It will taste sweet either
way." (Sri Ramakrishna) |
Honesty
- Mean what you say, Say what you mean |
Dictionary
definitions: truthful or able to be trusted; not likely to steal,
cheat or lie |
This
above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the
night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. (William
Shakespeare)
|
Being
entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.(Sigmund Freud) |
People
who are brutally honest get more satisfaction out of the brutality
than out of the honesty. (Richard J. Needham) |
Honour

truthfulness |
"The
shortest and surest way to live with honour in the world is to be

lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
(Martin Luther King, Jr.) |
I
am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to
succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have. (Abraham
Lincoln) |
Hospitality
- Always respect others and their rights |
Dictionary
definitions: friendly and welcoming to guests and visitors |
"Decide
right now what nice thing you can do for somebody else." (Anon) |
Humankind

together all things connect (Chief Seattle) |
"All
things share the same breath - the beast, the tree, the man, the
air shares its spirit with all the life it supports." (Native American
saying) |
Justice
- Seek always the path of 'right' |
Dictionary
definitions: the putting of the law into action |
Since
all justice is rightness, the justice, which brings praise to the
one who preserves it, is in nowise in any except rational beings.
... This justice is not rightness of knowledge, or rightness of
action, but rightness of will. (St. Anselm) |
There
is only one duty, only one safe course, and that is to try to be
right. (Winston Churchill) |

let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right."

you have charge of. (Jim Rohn) |
I
am responsible. Although I may not be able to prevent the worst
from happening, I am responsible for my attitude toward the inevitable
misfortunes that darken life. Bad things do happen; how I respond
to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can
choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity
of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure
the most precious gift I have - life itself. (Walter Anderson)
|
The
willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is the source
from which self-respect springs. (Joan Didion) |
